Data to identify global systemically important banks updated

On Friday 11 August, the European Banking Authority (EBA) published 12 indicators and underlying data from the 35 largest banks of the EU with an exposure measure, for leverage ratio purposes, in excess of €200 billion.

These figures for 2016 will help to identify a smaller subgroup of banks considered global systemically important institutions (G-SII),  following the final assessments of the Basel Committee on banking control and of the Financial Stability Council.

In 2015, the number of banks with an exposure measure, for the purposes of the leverage ratio, of more than €200 billion stood at 36 and, in 2016, three banks changed within the sample. The list includes six French, five German, five Spanish and two Italian banks.

Identifying a bank as a G-SII, which entails higher capital requirements, is the responsibility of the competent national authorities. The EBA is responsible for defining harmonised requirements for the data used to identify and rate potential G-SII, in accordance with standards agreed internationally. These data are published once a year. (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
