22/08/2017 (Agence Europe) – The Commission has not observed any overall increase in domestic prices in the EU following the ending of roaming costs on 15 June. This was the response provided by Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, to a written question from Portuguese MEP Carlos Zorrinho (S&D), on 21 August. The Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society stated that “There have been a number of isolated opportunist attempts to increase certain prices but the Commission has not observed any overall increase in domestic prices in the EU”. She points out that national regulators are in charge of monitoring and applying EU roaming rules and have the power to impose penalties conferred on them by the member states. The Commission will remain vigilant by way of regular contacts with national authorities and will put forward an interim report on the effects of the new rules by mid- December 2018. (SPj)
