At the end of the visit of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to Tehran for the inauguration ceremony of Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, the European External Action Service (EEAS) announced on 5 August that the EU and Iran want to expand their cooperation and will discuss this at their next High Level Dialogue meeting.
During bilateral meetings with Rouhani, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and the foreign policy advisor of the supreme leader, Ali-Akbar Velayati, Mogherini discussed "bilateral cooperation between EU and Iran on different areas", and "both sides confirmed their interest in expanding this cooperation". "Discussions will continue at the next High Level Dialogue meeting", the date of which has not been announced, the EEAS stated in a press release.
Mogherini also told her discussion partners that the joint plan on the nuclear programme "is delivering on its objectives". She "reiterated the EU's unwavering commitment to the deal, recalled its historic significance, multilateral dimension and its importance for regional and global stability", and underlined "the need for a full and effective implementation of the deal by all parties throughout its duration", the EEAS states.
Discussions also focused on the situation in the region, including the Syrian conflict. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
