01/08/2017 (Agence Europe) – Speaking through a spokesperson, the British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday 31 July reiterated that the freedom of movement between the UK and the EU would end in March 2019 with Brexit. This reminder comes in the wake of several ministers defending more flexible positions in the press over the weekend, including calls for a transitional period after Brexit takes effect. The spokesperson went on to say that it would be wrong to speculate on what this could look like, or to suggest that the freedom of movement could continue in its current form. Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond is for instance reported to have suggested that there will be no immediate changes in the immigration rules following Brexit and that a transitional period would follow, keeping most of the rights and obligations of the EU in place.
