In the vote on Monday 17 July on the European Commission proposals that seek to authorise the import into the EU, for nutrition purposes, of two varieties of transgenic soybeans treated with combinations of herbicides – including glyphosate – the majority of member state experts opposed authorisation. They were, however, unable to bring together the qualified majority necessary (at least 16 countries representing at least 65% of the EU population) to reject the proposals.
