On Monday 17 July, the European Commission reported the dismantling by Europol of widespread trafficking in horsemeat that is unfit for human consumption. The centre of the trafficking was Spain, it was masterminded from Belgium and its effects were Europe-wide.
The Commission says the arrests and seizures were the result of excellent cooperation across Europe and the measures adopted in 2015 in the wake of a similar scandal in 2013. Vigilance remains, however, very much the watchword.
