On Sunday 21 May, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini hailed the re-election of Hassan Rouhani as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
"Iranians took passionately part to political life of their country", Mogherini stated, congratulating Rouhani on the "strong mandate received". "The EU is ready to continue work for full joint comprehensive plan of action (JCPOA) implementation [on the Iranian nuclear programme], bilateral engagement, regional peace, and [to] meet expectations of all people in Iran", she added.
The head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Iran, Janusz Lewandowski (EPP, Poland), said that "Iran has chosen the future". "Young Iran [half of Iran's 80 million inhabitants are under 30] is taking things in hand", Lewandowski tweeted.
By contrast, US President Donald Trump called, from his visit to Saudi Arabia, for Iran to be "isolated" and accused the country of fanning sectarian flames and terrorism. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
