EU-Algeria meetings on security and Sahel-Sahara zone

Abdelkader Messahel, the Algerian Minister for North African Affairs at the African Union and League of Arab States will be in Brussels for a two-day visit. This visit will include meetings on the subject of security in the Sahel-Sahara zone and joint actions to carry out with the EU.

An Algerian press release quoted by the country’s media sources explained that “This visit was organised at the invitation of Ms Federica Mogherini, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the vice president of the European Commission. It will provide an opportunity for the two parties to hold high level discussions on the regional situation, particularly in the Sahel, Western Sahara and Libya, as well as the options and means for strengthening the bilateral dialogue in the security domain and the fight against radicalisation, terrorism and violent extremism”.

Mr Messahel also held a meeting on Monday with the European Commissioner for Security, Julian King.

According to an official press release published by the Algerian APS press agency, their discussions focused on, “The launch of a high-level bilateral dialogue in the security arena and prospects for cooperation between Algeria and EU”. Mr Messahel will also have meetings with EU Special Representative for the Sahel, Angela Losada.  (Original version in French by Fathi B’Chir)
