16/05/2017 (Agence Europe) – Following a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Sytlianides said on Monday 15 May that the European Union is on alert to bring help if needed. The European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) is taking the necessary measures for potential EU intervention should the European Medical Corps and logistical capacities be needed, Sytlianides stated. The ERCC is in close contact with the EU member states and Congolese authorities, and with the WHO, international partners and NGOs on the ground, to prevent any spread of the virus, using experience gained from the Ebola epidemic in Western Africa (2013-2016) which was stemmed in January 2016 (see EUROPE 11468).
