26/04/2017 (Agence Europe) – In 2016, EU member states granted protection to more than 700,000 asylum seekers (710,400), according to a new Eurostat publication of Wednesday 26 April. More than half of the beneficiaries were Syrians. This proportion represents more than twice the 2015 figure. The main beneficiaries were again Syrian nationals (405,600 people, or 57% of the total number of persons awarded this status in the EU member states), followed by nationals of Iraq (65,800, or 9%)...
