London wishes to avoid Madrid obtaining new powers over Gibraltar in the framework of Brexit

The tension mounted between London, Madrid and the European Union over the weekend regarding the territory of Gibraltar and its future in the framework of negotiations on Brexit.

London took exception to a passage in the draft guidelines presented on Friday 31 March by the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk (see EUROPE 11759). The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, said on Sunday 2 April that her country would never give up sovereignty over this territory without the agreement...
