08/03/2017 (Agence Europe) – The UK House of Lords inflicted a further setback on the government of Theresa May on Tuesday 7 March by calling for the UK parliament to have a vote on the outcome of the negotiations on the country’s withdrawal from the EU before the European Parliament vote. The upper chamber passed a second amendment to the Bill authorising the prime minister to trigger Article 50. May wants parliament only to be consulted at the end of the negotiations because she fears a vote might encourage the EU to offer a bad agreement for the UK in the hope that parliamentarians then veto leaving the EU, UK media have said. Last week, the Lords passed an amendment calling for the rights of the 3 million European citizens resident in the UK to be guaranteed. (SP)
