24/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – Finland has announced that it will achieve carbon-neutrality by 2045, although article four of the Paris Climate Agreement stipulates that global greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sinks must balance each other out during the second half of the century. Finnish environment minister Kimmo Tiilikainen said: ‘In Finland this balance can be reached sooner, in 2045 at the latest. This is when our forests could sequester all the fossil emissions generated in Finland. in the international context, this would place Finland among the highly ambitious countries. For the other countries, Sweden for example, has set similar targets.’ NGO CAN Europe (Climate Action Network Europe) welcomes the announcement as ‘good news for the climate’ and urges other member states to follow suit, wondering on 22 February which member state would be next.
