On Monday 9 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) condemned the terrorist attack that had taken place earlier that day in the north of Sinai, Egypt.
The attack claimed ten lives (nine police officers and a civilian) and left a dozen wounded. It is "a tragic reminder of the continuing terrorist threat to Egypt", the EEAS spokesperson said in a press release, adding that "the European Union condemns all forms of terrorism and stands side by side with Egypt in its fight against terrorism".
The German foreign ministry also condemned the attack, saying it stood alongside the Egyptian government in its fight against terrorism.
A suicide bomber reportedly rammed his lorry full of explosives against a police barrier and men then opened fire on the police officers. The army and police conducted air raids in response, which have reportedly killed eight jihadists.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council will meet on Monday 16 January and is expected to discuss the situation in Egypt. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
