The EU has given the go-ahead to €104 million for three development projects in Kenya, a country from the ACP nations (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) connected to the EU through the Cotonou Agreement. The financing agreements were signed in Nairobi on 20 December by European Commissioner for Development Neven Mimica and Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyata, on the fringes of the joint ACP-EU Parliamentary Assembly (see other article).
The projects will be financed by the European Development Fund (the 11th EDF). A €20 million public-private partnership project will provide water and sanitation facilities to nearly 400,000 people in arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya; €50 million will support smallholder agriculture in Kenya, notably by providing better access to finance, training and market integration; and €34 million will be allocated to a regional programme (for Kenya and 11 other African countries) for local legal empowerment to tackle the marginalisation of vulnerable communities that could be targeted by criminal gangs and radicalisation.
