On Thursday 15 December, MEPs called on the security and military forces of Burma/Myanmar to put an immediate stop to the murders, harassment and rape of the Rohingya population, and to their houses being set on fire.
In the joint resolution from the ECR, EFDD, Greens/EFA, GUE/NGL, EPP, ALDE and S&D Groups that was adopted, MEPs hail the Burmese government's announcement of the creation of a commission of inquiry into the recent violence in Rakhine State, and they call on it to allow external observers, including from the UN, to assist in the inquiry. The resolution adds that the perpetrators should have appropriate proceedings brought against them.
The European Parliament also asks the Burmese government and civil authorities to put an immediate end to the terrible discrimination and segregation of the Rohingya minority and to lift all discriminatory and disproportionate restrictions in Rakhine State.
In addition, the MEPs ask Aung San Suu Kyi, the Sakharov Prize winner, to use her key position within the government of Myanmar to improve the situation of the Rohingya minority. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
