16/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 14 November at the European Parliament EMIS enquiry committee, the former Director-General of the European Commission’s environment services, Karl Falkenberg (2009-2015), spoke out openly in favour of setting up a European market monitoring agency. In a response to Karima Delli (Greens/EFA, France), he explained, “I believe that the systems where we set up European agencies have proved themselves. Therefore, I think that this is something we should be looking at”. Similarly, Mr Falkenberg’s successor, Daniel Calleja Crespo, put forward the idea of using the Copenhagen European environment agency to carry out such a mission. The debate on setting up such an agency is currently the subject of much debate at the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee at the EP, as part of the draft report on the type approval and market surveillance of vehicles (see EUROPE 11664).
