26/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 25 October, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini took part in an EU-CELAC ministerial meeting in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (see other article), from where she described the efforts made by the Holy See and UNASUR to facilitate the dialogue between the government and opposition in Venezuela as “crucial”. Nonetheless, the efforts made by the Vatican to resolve the Venezuelan political and economic crisis seem contradicted on the ground. On the one side, the opposition, which controls the parliament, issued a political judgment symbolically condemning Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, and on the other side, Maduro, on his return to Caracas after a tour in Asia and Europe, warned the opposition against any attempt to instigate a "parliamentary coup d'État". Mogherini pointed out that "all the parties should embrace a sincere and constructive dialogue, as outlined by Pope Francis yesterday [Monday] during his private meeting with President Maduro". (MB)
