17/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) has condemned an attack carried out on Saturday morning 15 October against Muslims celebrating the Festival of Ashura in a Baghdad mosque. "Violence targeting innocent civilians is unacceptable", the spokesperson stated. The suicide attack has been claimed by so-called Islamic State (Daesh) and has left 34 people dead and several dozen wounded. According to the spokesperson, "this incident highlights the importance of restoring security and the rule of law throughout the country, and of combatting terrorist activities of all kinds". The European Union is committed to continuing its political and financial support to the people and authorities in Iraq in their fight for peace, democracy and pluralism in their country, the EEAS spokesperson stated. Terrorism is expected to be one of the subjects discussed at the EU-Iraq Cooperation Council in Brussels on Tuesday 18 October. (CG)
