EU earmarks €255,000 in emergency aid for cyclone survivors

05/10/2016 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 5 October, the European Commission decided to disburse €255,000 in emergency humanitarian aid to help the victims of the powerful 'Matthew' tropical cyclone, which devastated the island of Haiti on 4 October. The Copernicus system currently provides satellite images for examining the extent of the damage and identifying the most affected areas. European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Christos Stylianides stated in a press release that "this aid will provide immediate support to people affected in Haiti by providing them with temporary shelter, health services, drinking water and access to basic sanitation". This initial assistance will be further added to later at a later date. The level of destruction in the departments of the South and the Grande Anse region is enormous. (AN)
