03/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 4 October, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the head of COP 21, Ségolène Royal, will attend a vote at the European Parliament endorsing the EU’s ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement (see EUROPE 11636). Ban will make a speech at the event, which takes the EU one step closer to formal ratification. The global climate deal aims to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, attempting to reduce it to 1.5 degrees. It has a good chance of coming into force in November (30 day after at least 55 parties representing at least 55% of global emissions have lodged their ratification instruments with the UN). On Sunday 2 October, India ratified the deal, as expected. Greece will do so on 5 October, adding to the list of member states that will be able to lodge their ratification instrument at the same time as the EU. (AN)
