Commission proposes sharp cut in 2017 cod catch in Baltic

The European Commission announced on Tuesday 27 September that it had completed its proposals on the fishing quotas for 2017 in the waters of the Baltic Sea with significantly reduced catch limits for cod (see EUROPE 11611).

The scientific advice received recommended sharp reductions in catches of cod next year to help stocks recover from their currently very low level.

The Commission proposes, therefore, to set a total allowable catch (TAC) of only 1,588 tonnes for Western cod, down 88%...
