27/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 26 September, the European Commission and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) indicated in Montreal that they wanted to renew their partnership to address climate change. A Declaration of Intent was signed to this end by European Commissioner for Transport Violetta Bulc and Secretary General of the ICAO, Fang Liu, before the go-ahead of the ICAO general assembly on Tuesday 27 September. The general assembly is expected to adopt a global market measure to tackle emissions from international aviation transport. The two parties highlight the need to increase the environmental benefits of their cooperation, which began in 2013. Through this partnership, €6.6 million has been allocated to a project set up in 14 developing countries in Africa and the Caribbean. These countries have submitted an action plan to the ICAO to reduce CO² emissions. This includes 218 mitigation measures, for which implementation is now beginning. (AN)
