09/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – European Justice and Consumers Commissioner Vera Jourova said on Thursday 8 September that she had had a very good meeting with representatives of 31 European consumer organisations to discuss 'dieselgate'. The meeting was part of efforts to ensure that EU consumers receive fair treatment from Volkswagen, which is suspected by the Commission of breaches of two European consumer protection directives with its cheating on emissions from its diesel engines (see EUROPE 11617). “This was an important first step and this cooperation will continue”, Jourova is quoted in a press release as saying. She pledged to discuss this matter with the Volkswagen Group and with enforcement authorities when she meets them on 29 September. Internal Market and Industry Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska called on Volkswagen on 26 June voluntarily to offer appropriate compensation to European consumers. Consumer organisations have already begun the process of lodging collective actions (see EUROPE 11583). (AN)
