On Friday 4 August, the Council of the EU decided using the written procedure to extend the mandate of the European Union’s aid mission for integrated management of Libya’s borders (EUBAM Libya) until 21 August 2017. The mandate would otherwise have run out on 21 August 2016 (see EUROPE 11490). It also approved a budget of €17 million for the period from 22 August 2016 to 21 August 2017. The mission is currently in Tunis (Tunisia) for security reasons, so the approved budget takes account of activities and staff in Tunis, along with the possibility of redeployment in Libya once the security situation allows, the Council stated in a press release. EUBAM Libya’s mandate is to plan a potential EU mission to advise the Libyan authorities and boost their capabilities in the area of criminal justice, migration, border security and counter-terrorism.
