Brussels, 29/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 July, Copa-Cogeca (farming organisations and cooperatives of the EU) and the European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) welcomed the approval by the European Commission of the sector's best practices in labelling compound feed for food-producing animals.
The Commission published this code of best practice in the Official Journal of the EU C 275/3 of 28 July. This code aims to clarify the requirements laid down by the European rules on labelling animal feed and to provide practical advice: - to producers of compound feed when creating a label; - to farmers, to give them the information they need to make the right choice and use the product correctly.
The code aims to harmonise practices across member states. A press release issued by Copa-Cogeca stresses that the code of practice also have the “strong” support of the member states within the Standing Committee on Animals, Plants, Food and Feed. Alexander Döring, Secretary General of FEFAC, stressed the importance of the section on claims in the code. “This section outlines a harmonised set of requirements vis-à-vis the nature of the claims that are permitted or prohibited as well as guidance to the substantiation of claims. This is a major step towards more transparency in the feed chain and will favour innovation”, he explained. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
