Brussels, 30/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - Progress was made in Montenegro's EU accession process on Thursday 30 June, with the opening of two new negotiation chapters.
The Council of the EU announced that the 4th meeting of the accession conference with Montenegro, which was held in Brussels on Thursday, enabled the opening of Chapter 12 on food security, veterinary and phytosanitary policy, and Chapter 13 on fisheries.
For Chapter 12, Montenegro will have to send the European Commission a national programme for the upgrading of establishments for products of animal origin, and another programme for the milk sector, including a strategy for the use of non-compliant raw milk. It will also have to provide guarantees for the establishment of an EU-compliant system for official controls of live animal products, and develop relevant administrative structures.
As part of Chapter 13, Montenegro will have to adopt legislation that provides a substantial degree of alignment with EU requirements for the common fisheries policy. It will also have to strengthen its administrative, control and inspection capacity, the Council states.
To date, 24 of the 35 negotiation chapters have been opened, two of which have been closed. (Original version in French by Jan Kordys)
