29/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - Protection of PDI for Café de Valdesia. On Wednesday 29 June, the European Commission announced that it had approved the request to register two new products in the register of protected geographical indications (PDI). This will include 'Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça' from Portugal, a small fruit from the cherry family, which can be distinguished by the strength of its aroma and balance between sweet-and-sour (it also contains a strong concentration of sugar and natural acids). For the first time, the Commission has protected a product from the Dominican Republic. This involves the 'Café de Valdesia', an arabica kind of coffee. This designation comes on top of the 24 other geographical indications that have already been registered for third countries. (LC)
