22/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - Cities urge heads of state to re-engage with fundamental European values. During World Refugee Day, 11 major and capital European cities (Nantes, Birmingham, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Stockholm, Warsaw, Gent, Leipzig, Florence, Rotterdam and Vienna) sent a letter on Monday 20 June to the Presidents of the European Commission, European Council and European Parliament, as well as the heads of state of member states. This calls for carrying out a European level reflection into common European values such as solidarity, humanity and dignity when taking in refugees. According to the signatory mayors, these three principles must prevail, especially for women, children and unaccompanied minors. They also call for a better taking into account of cities in the elaboration of reception and integration policies for migrants and refugees, on the lines of the principles included in the Eurocities Charter on Integrating Cities.
