Brussels, 02/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - The EU Dog & Cat Alliance, which represents almost 60 organisations from over 20 member states, held a conference hosted by Daniel Dalton (ECR, UK) in Brussels on Wednesday 1 June to consider, in particular, how better to tackle the illegal trade of dogs and cats in the EU.
Dalton and the Alliance want the EU to adopt an ambitious action plan to protect pets and to tackle the illegal trade in dogs and cats, including: - compulsory identification and registration of dogs and cats; - compulsory licensing of dog and cat breeders; - tighter controls on the internet trade of dogs and cats; - measures to prevent the spread of zoonoses; - better protection for consumers when buying a pet.
Dalton hopes that the issues covered in Wednesday's conference will feed into discussions on the new animal welfare platform (see EUROPE 11552). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
