01/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - Political agreement to extend EULEX mission's mandate. On Wednesday 1 June, the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the EU (COREPER) agreed to extend the mandate for the EU's rule of law mission in Kosovo (EULEX Kosovo) until 14 June 2018, according to an announcement made to EUROPE from one European source. In Pristina, there were, however, certain quarters keen on putting an end to this mission (see EUROPE 11487). COREPER decided to allocate €34.5 million to the mission for the period from 15 June 2016 to 14 June 2017. For the same period, €31.5 million will also be allocated to EULEX with regard to its support role for relocating judicial proceedings within a member state. The aim is to begin proceedings and make official decisions on criminal charges resulting from an investigation into allegations made in the "Marty" report by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on "the inhumane treatment of people and the illegal trafficking of human organs in Kosovo" (see EUROPE 11065). These decisions still have to be formally adopted by the Council. (CG)
