Brussels, 27/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - The terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels will again be the focus of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport (EYCS) Council taking place in Brussels on Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 May.
On the first day of their meeting, the ministers will underline the importance of developing media literacy and critical thinking through education and training in order to fight radicalisation among young people. The European Commission is expected to present a communication in the coming months which compiles all the European initiatives and/or tools enabling the fight against religious radicalism.
On the second day, the European ministers will adopt conclusions on the role of Europeana, the EU's public digital library. They will ask the Commission to amend how this project is financed, replacing the current subsidies with a combination of subsidies and public procurement. In addition, the ministers are expected to hold an initial exchange of views on the revision of the audiovisual media services directive, which the Commission presented on 25 May.
What will come out of the Council:
Education and Youth. Conclusions on the role played by the youth sector to prevent and fight violent radicalisation among young people, and on the development of media literacy and critical thinking through education and training; - debates on the role of youth policy in building young people's identity, on the modernisation of higher education, and on the role that education and youth policies can play in preventing radicalisation among young people.
Culture and Sport. Conclusions on Europeana and on enhancing good governance in major sport events; - debates on the revision of the audiovisual media services directive (focused on the promotion of cross-border circulation of European audiovisual content) and on the improvement of good governance in sport; - structured dialogue between sport representatives, ministers for sport and European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics on good governance in major sport events.
