Council gets green light for eco-label products criteria

Brussels, 18/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - Unless the European Parliament is opposed, the European Commission will soon be given authorisation to adopt ecological criteria for granting the EU eco-label for three new categories of consumer products under European regulation 66/2010.

On Tuesday 17 May, the Council of the EU decided not to oppose the adoption of three Commission decisions respectively establishing ecological criteria applicable to personal, notebook and tablet computers, as well as for furniture and footwear.

These decisions are subject to regulatory procedure with examination. If no Council objections are forthcoming, the European Commission will be able to adopt them, unless the Parliament objects.

If the ecological criteria are adopted, they will have to be respected by companies seeking the eco-label for their products, in view of informing consumers that these products have less environmental impact during their respective life cycles. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
