29/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - United Kingdom slow to put single European railway area in place. The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to the United Kingdom on Thursday 28 April calling on it to incorporate Directive 2012/34/EU into national legislation. This directive establishes a single European railway area. The Commission had already sent a letter of formal notice in July 2015 but, hitherto, has not received a response. If the UK does not comply within two months, the Commission may refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the EU. Member states had until 16 June 2015 to transpose the directive which contains the basic provisions for market opening in the railway sector. (JK)
