25/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU pledges extra €20 million for safety of Chernobyl. Ahead of the 30th anniversary of the disaster at the nuclear power station of Chernobyl (former USSR, Ukraine), on 26 April 1986, the European Commission on Monday 25 April announced a further commitment of €20 million - on top of the €45 million pledged by the G7 and the Commission in April 2015 - under the fund managed by the EBRD for the secure decommissioning of units 1 to 3 of the Chernobyl site. So far, the Commission has already committed €730 million to projects for the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power station, including €550 million for assistance projects (€470 million through international funds and €80 million directly implemented by the Commission). Within this framework, with an envelope of €430 million, the EU is the largest contributor to the sarcophagus project to encase and contain unit 4 of the Chernobyl site. (EH)
