EU and Islamabad strengthen cooperation

Brussels, 21/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - At their fifth political counter-terrorism dialogue on Wednesday 20 April, the EU and Pakistan reaffirmed “their determination to jointly combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”.

According to a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the two parties agreed on the “urgent need for a comprehensive approach to terrorism” and to step up cooperation to prevent and counter violent extremism, radicalisation and recruitment, and to address the root causes of these problems. The EU and Pakistan also agreed to explore ways of strengthening, “through mutual consent”, cooperation, initiatives and exchanges of best practice in areas such as criminal justice and the rule of law, law enforcement and security, countering the financing of terrorism, and countering violent extremism.

The EU and Pakistan will also cooperate to help bring progress to international efforts in forums such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the Global Counter Terrorism Forum (GCTF).

The next dialogue will be held in Islamabad in 2017. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
