EU hails mobilisation of voters in difficult context

Brussels, 22/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 21 March, the European Union hailed the public spirit shown by many voters participating in the presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but it continues to be concerned about the credibility of the ballot.

“The Congolese people voted in large numbers in the presidential elections and voting was largely held in the calm despite the means for the campaign being cut and shortcomings in the organisation of the vote”, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said in a press release on Monday evening. Stating that “considerable differences in the candidates' campaign means and media access” had been noted, among other irregularities, the EU does not want to enter into the details of concerns that it has already expressed on “the general context that surrounded the preparation of the elections”.
