17/03/2016 (Agence Europe) - Earth Hour on 19 March, WWF disappointed by the European Council. Millions of citizens and institutions like the European Parliament will take part in Earth Hour on Saturday 19 March by switching lights off for the climate from 8.30pm to 9.30pm (local time). Earth Hour is a global initiative organised by WWF. It was first done in Sydney in 2007 with the aim of raising people's awareness about action for combating climate change. This year, the event takes place three months after the historic Paris Agreement. Millions of citizens will urge their leaders to “change climate change”, explains WWF, regretting that the European Council meeting in Brussels does not have greater ambitions (see other article). On Thursday, WWF said that leaders would be lagging behind their citizens if they do not call for a higher level of climate ambition, pointing out that to keep global warming at below 2 degrees Celsius and move in the direction of 1.5 degrees, the EU would have to go further than reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80-95% by 2050.
