Brussels, 26/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 25 February, the European Commission decided to send a reasoned opinion to Greece for its inadequate protection of species and habitats in the areas of the pan- European network Natura 2000, contrary to the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC).
Under this directive, the member states were obliged, within a period of six years, to appoint protected areas in their legislation and to adopt the necessary measures to improve the state of habitats and species in these areas. Although Greece did formally designate its sites within the required period, the Commission states that it has failed to establish the necessary conservation priorities and measures.
Despite an initial call to order, the Greek authorities have not remedied this deficiency. They now have two months to do so, or the Commission may bring Greece before the Court of Justice. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
