Brussels, 26/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's agriculture committee adopted the opinion of Michel Dantin (EPP, France) on cohesion policy in upland areas on Tuesday 23 February.
The opinion lists already existing measures within the common agricultural policy (CAP) supporting agricultural and rural development in upland area. It sets out proposals for improving the competitiveness of farms, diversification and the complementarity of economic activities. The aim is to put in place better coordinated policies for upland areas. The opinion will be submitted to the Parliament's regional development committee, which has the lead on this issue, ahead of a plenary session vote in April. “Economic and social development and maintaining agricultural production in upland areas in Europe is crucial. Nevertheless, it has to be said that, despite sectoral measures and aid, there is no real European approach for these areas”, commented Dantin. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
