16/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - End of CVM for Romania. On Monday 15 February, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker gave assurances to Romania's Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos that Romania would no longer be subject to assessment under the cooperation and verification mechanism (CVM) at the end of his mandate from 2019. “If Romania is ready before Bulgaria, it is evident that this mechanism must come to an end”, Juncker said at a joint press conference. Like Bulgaria, Romania has been subjected to this rule of law monitoring mechanism since 2007, which assesses progress in judicial reforms and the fight against corruption (see EUROPE 11477). The latest report published at the end of January presented a picture for Romania that was a little more positive than for Bulgaria. (SP)
