€100 million to tackle the deep-rooted causes of migration

Brussels, 14/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 14 January, the European Commission announced in a press release that ten actions, financed for a maximum of €100 million from the European emergency trust fund for Africa, were to be launched in the Sahel to support stability and fight against the deep-rooted causes of illegal migration in the region.

These are actions that the EU and its African partners committed to implementing before the end of 2016 in the joint action plan adopted at the EU-Africa summit on migration in Valletta in November (see EUROPE 11429) and at the G5 Sahel in Ndjamena (see EUROPE 11435) which confirmed the commitment of the region's countries to address the challenges of security and development together.

An amount of €7 million will therefore go to financing the regional cooperation of the G5 (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger). Three projects for a total sum of €43.5 million will be implemented in Mali to support local authorities and vulnerable people in the north of the country, and to facilitate jobs creation in the rest of the country. Two projects for a sum of €32 million will be implemented in the Agadez region of Niger to support the authorities in the management of migratory flows and to promote sustainable alternatives to illegal migration. Three actions will be implemented in Senegal for a sum of €13.5 million so as to support the most vulnerable populations. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
