13/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Council of Europe's commitment to net neutrality. Following on from the European institutions, it is now the turn of the Council of Europe to promote the principle of network neutrality. Meeting in Strasbourg on Wednesday 13 January, the Committee of Ministers adopted orientations to protect the freedom of expression and private life on the Internet. The recommendation asserts that “Internet traffic must be treated equally, without discrimination, restriction or interference, irrespective of the sender, destination, content, application, service or device used”. It is calling on the different countries to develop their respective legal frameworks to ensure the protection of the right to freedom of expression, access to information and respect for private life. It is urging them, for example, to ensure that Internet access providers are liable for any violation of the principle of network neutrality. It is also urging the national authorities to ensure traffic management practices follow up. (SPj)
