Brussels, 13/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - During a meeting with the Queen of Jordan, Rania Al Abdullah, in Brussels on Tuesday 12 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini hailed Jordan's role as “a strong partner and crucial player for the stability of the region”.
Mogherini and Queen Rania spoke about the very tense and volatile situation in the region, particularly the crisis in Syria and its humanitarian consequences affecting the neighbouring countries. Mogherini thanked Jordan for “generously” hosting a great number of Syrian refugees - over 622,000 have been recorded in the country by the UNHCR.
Mogherini confirmed that the EU would continue to cooperate closely with Jordan and would mobilise all its instruments to increase its support to the country in the coming months. She did not, however, give any further details.
The EU has created a trust fund for Syria, which is equipped with €1 billion to help refugees and the host countries. An international humanitarian conference on Syria is being organised in London on 4 February. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
