12/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns terrorist attack in Istanbul. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn have condemned the suicide bombing in the morning of Tuesday 12 January in Sultanahmet Square, close to Saint Sophia and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. The powerful explosion killed at least ten people and injured some fifteen others, mainly foreigners and including German tourists. Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stylianides said on his Twitter account that he was “appalled” by the attack. “We stand united against violence and terror”, he added. “The EU and Turkey stand united against all forms of terrorism”, said Mogherini and Hahn in their press release, stating that both parties “must step up our efforts in this regard in full respect of our obligations under international law, including human rights and humanitarian laws”. Tackling terrorism was identified as a priority at the EU-Turkey summit of 29 November 2015. (CG)
