Brussels, 11/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 11 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced that “implementation” of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme was expected to happen “soon”, even if no date has yet been set.
“My expectations are that this day will be soon”, Mogherini said at a press conference in Prague with Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek. Saying that this implementation was connected to the “full implementation” of what has been agreed, she added that the implementation of the agreements was “on the right track”, which is, in her opinion, “encouraging”.
After an agreement was obtained on 14 July (see EUROPE 11359), official adoption of the agreement took place on 18 October 2015, enabling Iran to begin implementing its nuclear-connected commitments, as agreed at the agreement (see EUROPE 11413).
Mogherini stated that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was due to finish its work “so that we are fully sure that all is as it should be”. Once the IAEA deems that Iran has fulfilled all its obligations, the economic sanctions can progressively be lifted.
Mogherini said she had talked to US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday 10 January, after speaking to Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday 3 January. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
