07/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Juncker calls for Schengen to be saved. In Amsterdam on Thursday 7 January, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, explained that he “understood” why certain member states had brought back controls on their internal borders, as Sweden and Denmark have recently decided, but that he could not accept the abandonment of the Schengen system and “everything it stands for”. “We must save Schengen”, he said on the sidelines of the Commission's official visit to the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU. Juncker explained that he was not without sympathy for Sweden, which bears a heavy burden in terms of accommodating refugees, but that it was the collective duty of the member states to safeguard the freedom of movement. And “bringing back controls on the internal borders is not a collective response”. (SP)
