Brussels, 15/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - Employment rose by 0.3% in the eurozone and 0.4% in the EU in the third quarter of 2015 compared with the previous quarter, according to figures published by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Tuesday 15 December.
Compared with the third quarter of the previous year, employment rose by 1.1% in both the EU and the eurozone. Eurostat says that of the countries for which figures are available, Estonia (+2.1%), Hungary (+0.8%), Ireland, Spain, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom (both +0.6%) had the highest employment growth in Q315 on Q2. The greatest falls were recorded in Croatia (-0.6%), Portugal (-0.5%) and Malta (-0.3%).
Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Marianne Thyssen said: “The EU labour market is showing steady signs of improvement, with employment figures gradually rising since mid-2013. However, more remains to be done. There are still 12 million people in Europe today that have been out of work for more than a year.” (Elodie Lamer)
