Brussels, 06/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 5 November, the leader of the European Parliament delegation to the EU-Ukraine parliamentary association committee, Andrej Plenkovic (EPP, Croatia), called for the continuation of reforms in Ukraine.
“We encouraged our partners to adopt the full package of laws necessary for the implementation of the visa liberalisation action plan”, Plenkovic said at the end of a two-day meeting in Kiev with members of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko and Prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. “We intend to follow closely crucial measures in the European reform agenda, especially constitutional and electoral reforms, as well as decentralisation, anti-corruption activities, justice and public administration reforms”, Plenkovic added. He said that this work would be conducted in parallel with a comprehensive capacity-building programme for the Ukrainian Parliament. This programme is being designed in a joint exercise between the European Parliament and Ukrainian Parliament, with the significant contribution of former president of the European Parliament Pat Cox (who also worked on the release of former Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko).
While Plenkovic said that “a strong desire to continue on the path of reforms and modernisation of the country” had been witnessed, he added that “a strong pro-European coalition should demonstrate courage and determination in ensuring a stable majority able to deliver tangible reforms for the benefit of the citizens”.
Plenkovic reiterated that the European Parliament was ready to help Ukraine. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
