EU calls on parties to achieve agreement on power-sharing

Brussels, 06/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 6 November, the European Union encouraged the parties in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to take the necessary steps to implement the agreement obtained this summer. A political agreement has reportedly been found.

“We understand that parties are close to an agreement and we encourage all parties to make the necessary remaining steps in view of implementing the commitment of the agreement of 2 June to 15 July”, said a spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

On Friday 6 November, the four main political parties reportedly succeeded in finding a consensus on sharing power for the transition period before the early parliamentary elections (which have been confirmed for 24 April 2016). The meeting of 19 October, along with European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, did not enable any progress (see EUROPE 11415).

Mogherini's spokesperson said that such an agreement would be “pertinent” in view of the publication of the enlargement country progress reports. It is expected that these reports will be published on 10 November. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
